COMMUNICATIONS

Letter from the Vice Chairman:

Dear OWASP Community,

Over the past number of months the Board of Directors has been working on the feedback received from the community. This feedback aligned with our key strategic goals for the year. One of our key goals was to further strengthen the "P" in OWASP. To this end we have been working with the Open Security Summit to put more of a focus on improving project development and growth and hope to enable projects through events such as this.

Another goal is to strengthen our student outreach. One idea I had was to work with colleges all over the world to support our projects development as part of their internships. I wonder if there would be anyone in the community to assist in this effort by creating a Committee under the revised Committee 2.0 model - https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Governance/OWASP_Committees. To simplify things I have added a quick start guide at the beginning of the document.

Diversity is something that we hold dear to our hearts. There are a number of people in our community that have driven this initiative to enable OWASP to be a more diverse community, without naming any names, we would like to thank them and encourage more of those in and outside of the OWASP community to get involved and help OWASP grow.

Last but not least, planning for our global conferences is well under way with OWASP Global AppSec Tel Aviv coming up at the end of May – one small ask is that everyone share information on this conference in your communities,https://telaviv.appsecglobal.org.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Owen Pendlebury
OWASP Vice Chairman

OWASP FOUNDATION UPDATE FROM INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:

For these first few months I have been focused on business operations retooling. As you know, Mailman was recently retired. There is now an online static archive of historical messages. Our goal before Q3 is to have most of our tools on managed, trusted hosted services.

We have increased our use of JIRA to manage inbound requests and last month the team closed 98.6% of service tickets within their prescribed SLA. In January it was 20.4%. This is a very big accomplishment and demonstrates our progress on this work effort. There have also been a number of back office changes that most members won't notice, but we're focused on stronger business continuity for the long term.

In addition to all our upcoming events, the staff along with some members of the community are actively prototyping how we will completely update the website this summer. This effort will not be simply cosmetic, it will be a foundational change in how we manage and publish content that we believe will better connect with our community - and more importantly help us grow. Expect more updates on this in the coming months.

Be safe out there,

Mike McCamon

ADVANTAGE OF ETHICAL HACKING

Advantage of Ethical Hacking

Hacking is quite useful in the following purpose-

1-To recover lost information, especially in case you lost your password.

2-To perform penetration testing to strengthen computer and network security.

3-To put adequate preventative measure in place to prevent security breaches.

4-To have a computer system that prevents malicious hackers from gaining access.

5-Fighting against terrorism and national security breaches.

CloudFrunt - A Tool For Identifying Misconfigured CloudFront Domains

CloudFrunt is a tool for identifying misconfigured CloudFront domains.

Background
CloudFront is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS). CloudFront users create "distributions" that serve content from specific sources (an S3 bucket, for example).
Each CloudFront distribution has a unique endpoint for users to point their DNS records to (ex. d111111abcdef8.cloudfront.net). All of the domains using a specific distribution need to be listed in the "Alternate Domain Names (CNAMEs)" field in the options for that distribution.
When a CloudFront endpoint receives a request, it does NOT automatically serve content from the corresponding distribution. Instead, CloudFront uses the HOST header of the request to determine which distribution to use. This means two things:

  1. If the HOST header does not match an entry in the "Alternate Domain Names (CNAMEs)" field of the intended distribution, the request will fail.
  2. Any other distribution that contains the specific domain in the HOST header will receive the request and respond to it normally.
This is what allows the domains to be hijacked. There are many cases where a CloudFront user fails to list all the necessary domains that might be received in the HOST header. For example:
  • The domain "test.disloops.com" is a CNAME record that points to "disloops.com".
  • The "disloops.com" domain is set up to use a CloudFront distribution.
  • Because "test.disloops.com" was not added to the "Alternate Domain Names (CNAMEs)" field for the distribution, requests to "test.disloops.com" will fail.
  • Another user can create a CloudFront distribution and add "test.disloops.com" to the "Alternate Domain Names (CNAMEs)" field to hijack the domain.
This means that the unique endpoint that CloudFront binds to a single distribution is effectively meaningless. A request to one specific CloudFront subdomain is not limited to the distribution it is associated with.

Installation
$ pip install boto3
$ pip install netaddr
$ pip install dnspython
$ git clone https://github.com/disloops/cloudfrunt.git
$ cd cloudfrunt
$ git clone https://github.com/darkoperator/dnsrecon.git
CloudFrunt expects the dnsrecon script to be cloned into a subdirectory called dnsrecon.

Usage
cloudfrunt.py [-h] [-l TARGET_FILE] [-d DOMAINS] [-o ORIGIN] [-i ORIGIN_ID] [-s] [-N]

-h, --help Show this message and exit
-s, --save Save the results to results.txt
-N, --no-dns Do not use dnsrecon to expand scope
-l, --target-file TARGET_FILE File containing a list of domains (one per line)
-d, --domains DOMAINS Comma-separated list of domains to scan
-o, --origin ORIGIN Add vulnerable domains to new distributions with this origin
-i, --origin-id ORIGIN_ID The origin ID to use with new distributions

Example
$ python cloudfrunt.py -o cloudfrunt.com.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com -i S3-cloudfrunt -l list.txt

Klar - Integration Of Clair And Docker Registry

Integration of Clair and Docker Registry (supports both Clair API v1 and v3)
Klar is a simple tool to analyze images stored in a private or public Docker registry for security vulnerabilities using Clair https://github.com/coreos/clair. Klar is designed to be used as an integration tool so it relies on enviroment variables. It's a single binary which requires no dependencies.
Klar serves as a client which coordinates the image checks between the Docker registry and Clair.

Binary installation
The simplest way is to download the latest release (for OSX and Linux) from https://github.com/optiopay/klar/releases/ and put the binary in a folder in your PATH (make sure it has execute permission).

Installation from source code
Make sure you have Go language compiler installed and configured https://golang.org/doc/install
Then run
go get github.com/optiopay/klar
make sure your Go binary folder is in your PATH (e.g. export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/go/bin)

Usage
Klar process returns if 0 if the number of detected high severity vulnerabilities in an image is less than or equal to a threshold (see below) and 1 if there were more. It will return 2 if an error has prevented the image from being analyzed.
Klar can be configured via the following environment variables:
  • CLAIR_ADDR - address of Clair server. It has a form of protocol://host:port - protocol and port default to http and 6060 respectively and may be omitted. You can also specify basic authentication in the URL: protocol://login:password@host:port.
  • CLAIR_OUTPUT - severity level threshold, vulnerabilities with severity level higher than or equal to this threshold will be outputted. Supported levels are Unknown, Negligible, Low, Medium, High, Critical, Defcon1. Default is Unknown.
  • CLAIR_THRESHOLD - how many outputted vulnerabilities Klar can tolerate before returning 1. Default is 0.
  • CLAIR_TIMEOUT - timeout in minutes before Klar cancels the image scanning. Default is 1
  • DOCKER_USER - Docker registry account name.
  • DOCKER_PASSWORD - Docker registry account password.
  • DOCKER_TOKEN - Docker registry account token. (Can be used in place of DOCKER_USER and DOCKER_PASSWORD)
  • DOCKER_INSECURE - Allow Klar to access registries with bad SSL certificates. Default is false. Clair will need to be booted with -insecure-tls for this to work.
  • DOCKER_TIMEOUT - timeout in minutes when trying to fetch layers from a docker registry
  • DOCKER_PLATFORM_OS - The operating system of the Docker image. Default is linux. This only needs to be set if the image specified references a Docker ManifestList instead of a usual manifest.
  • DOCKER_PLATFORM_ARCH - The architecture the Docker image is optimized for. Default is amd64. This only needs to be set if the image specified references a Docker ManifestList instead of a usual manifest.
  • REGISTRY_INSECURE - Allow Klar to access insecure registries (HTTP only). Default is false.
  • JSON_OUTPUT - Output JSON, not plain text. Default is false.
  • FORMAT_OUTPUT - Output format of the vulnerabilities. Supported formats are standard, json, table. Default is standard. If JSON_OUTPUT is set to true, this option is ignored.
  • WHITELIST_FILE - Path to the YAML file with the CVE whitelist. Look at whitelist-example.yaml for the file format.
  • IGNORE_UNFIXED - Do not count vulnerabilities without a fix towards the threshold
Usage:
CLAIR_ADDR=localhost CLAIR_OUTPUT=High CLAIR_THRESHOLD=10 DOCKER_USER=docker DOCKER_PASSWORD=secret klar postgres:9.5.1

Debug Output
You can enable more verbose output but setting KLAR_TRACE to true.
  • run export KLAR_TRACE=true to persist between runs.

Dockerized version
Klar can be dockerized. Go to $GOPATH/src/github.com/optiopay/klar and build Klar in project root. If you are on Linux:
CGO_ENABLED=0 go build -a -installsuffix cgo .
If you are on Mac don't forget to build it for Linux:
GOOS=linux go build .
To build Docker image run in the project root (replace klar with fully qualified name if you like):
docker build -t klar .
Then pass env vars as separate --env arguments, or create an env file and pass it as --env-file argument. For example save env vars as my-klar.env:
CLAIR_ADDR=localhost
CLAIR_OUTPUT=High
CLAIR_THRESHOLD=10
DOCKER_USER=docker
DOCKER_PASSWORD=secret
Then run
docker run --env-file=my-klar.env klar postgres:9.5.1

Amazon ECR support
There is no permanent username/password for Amazon ECR, the credentials must be retrived using aws ecr get-login and they are valid for 12 hours. Here is a sample script which may be used to provide Klar with ECR credentials:
DOCKER_LOGIN=`aws ecr get-login --no-include-email`
PASSWORD=`echo $DOCKER_LOGIN | cut -d' ' -f6`
REGISTRY=`echo $DOCKER_LOGIN | cut -d' ' -f7 | sed "s/https:\/\///"`
DOCKER_USER=AWS DOCKER_PASSWORD=${PASSWORD} ./klar ${REGISTRY}/my-image

Google GCR support
For authentication against GCR (Google Cloud Registry), the easiest way is to use the application default credentials. These only work when running Klar from GCP. The only requirement is the Google Cloud SDK.
DOCKER_USER=oauth2accesstoken
DOCKER_PASSWORD="$(gcloud auth application-default print-access-token)"
With Docker:
DOCKER_USER=oauth2accesstoken
DOCKER_PASSWORD="$(docker run --rm google/cloud-sdk:alpine gcloud auth application-default print-access-token)"

Book Review - The Italian Wars Part 1 Helion Publishing

Something I've not done before, a Book Review, Yarkshire Gamer is turning into Radio 4 I hear you cry !

To make life easier the extensive Production Crew at Yarkshire TV have done a little 5 minute feature on the book.

The book can be purchased direct from the publisher on the link below, £19.95 including post and packing,

https://www.helion.co.uk/military-history-books/the-italian-wars-volume-1-the-expedition-of-charles-viii-into-italy-and-the-battle-of-fornovo.php

There are 128 pages with black and white illustrations throughout and colour plates (example above) in the centre.

It contains everything you would expect from a Book of this type, history, armies involved, battle description etc, I particularly liked the modern day photos of the field and also the "orbat" in the Appendix.

So in short everything I needed a year ago when I started my army ! Is there a conspiracy 🤔 plenty of new ideas for units going ahead. Definitely Recommended

Happy 4Th Of July
